Adolescent Substance Use Disorder:  Utilizing DBT and 12-step Approach in Clinical Practice


This lecture will provide an overview of adolescent substance use disorder and clinical application of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and 12-step facilitation. Lecture will provide overview of Biosocial model of DBT and targets of treatment with adolescents. The training will also provide experiential techniques applicable to group, individual, and family. Attendees should be prepared to engage in practical application of DBT and 12-step techniques during training.


Once the attendee completes the workshop he/she will:

  • Be able to identify criteria for adolescent substance use disorder.
  • Be able to understand underlying model of DBT and when to utilize DBT in the treatment of substance use with adolescents.
  • Be able to summarize stages of treatment and identify targeted behaviors when utilizing DBT in counseling.
  • Be able to describe and utilize DBT and/or 12-step interventions that are effective with substance use clients.


Presenter:   Allison Zito Basham, MA, LPC is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Psychodrama Facilitator who has worked in the addiction field for over 10 years. In 2004, Allison earned her Undergraduate Degree in Psychology from Kennesaw State University. In 2007, she earned a Masters in Professional Counseling with a Concentration in Marriage and Family Therapy from Argosy University. In July 2013, Allison became an Intensively Trained DBT therapist. She completed her training through Behavioral Tech, LLC and is a part of a Consultation Team with other DBT professionals. From 2013-2015, She served as a Clinical Associate with Peachtree DBT.  She utilizes Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) in the treatment of substance abuse along with the 12-step approach. In 2015, Allison became the owner of Recovery Inside Out, LLC (RIO, LLC). At RIO, LLC, Allison provides counseling services to individuals and families. In April, 2016, Allison joined Peachtree Psychology, LLC and acts an independent contractor providing counseling services to individuals and families.
